Manipulation of Equivalent Images: A Comparative Study of Parijat's Shirishko Phool and Its Translation by Varya as Blue Mimosa

Abstract

Language denotes the whole embodiment of society, culture, religion and the way of life with the use of certain images. In T. V. Varya's rendering of Parijat's Shirishko Phool in to Blue Mimosa, the word image and its sense related to Nepalese culture, religion, and society have been blurred. While translating the vivid imageries related with the characters, settings, dialogues, onomatopoeias, similes, metaphors, proverbs, idioms and symbols of the novel, the translator has in some cases obliterated the literal images to preserve the sense while in some other he has obliterated the sense to preserve the literal images causing both sense and image of the source text to be blurred. So, the translated version of the novel doesn’t represent the equivalent cultural images; it is just the manipulation not the exact translation.
