Abstract

This thesis entitled "Exploring Adjacency Pairs in Classroom Interaction" is a research work which attempts to explore adjacency pairs in classroom interaction. The main objectives of this study are to explore initiation and types of adjacency pairs in the classroom interaction in secondary level classes. In order to fulfill the objectives of the study, I selected five schools of Dhanusha district using judgmental sampling procedure. To collect data, I observed six English classes of secondary level (Grade IX and X) of each school. I also used tape recorder and check-lists to collect the required data. The result of the study shows that the English classes in Nepal are dominantly initiated by the teachers. Most of the conversations in the classroom are initiated by the teachers and students practise closed set of adjacency pairs. The classroom interaction seems to be Q-A-Q-A-Q-A (Question-Answer-Question-Answer-Question-Answer). The thesis is organized into four chapters. The first chapter consists of general background, review of the related, literature, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology which incorporates sources of data, sampling procedure, tools and process of data collection and limitations of the study. The collected data are presented in the pie-chart and table and then analyzed and interpreted them in the third chapter. In the fourth chapter, findings are listed and recommendations are given on the basis of findings.
