Abstract
The thesis entitled Washback effect in terminal examinations is an attempt of
the researcher to find out the washback effect of terminal as well as of the final
examination. It further aims at analyzing the result sheets of public and private
schools. It is an inevitable that washback is an inherent quality of an examination.
Washback, either positively or negatively, it must leave its flavor inside and
outside the classroom. Certain type of examination effect is there in the mind of
students, teachers as well as the parents. It influences the whole societal scenario.
Here within the periphery of classroom, there are various types of test, where
terminal examination is one of them, what is its impact on students is the case. To
meet the objective of the research, eighty students from two schools i.e. forty from
Public and forty from private and twelve teachers from different public and private
schools were selected and took their responses with the help of questionnaire.
Similarly, marks obtained by the students in different examination were also being
taken for the purpose. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted. The major
findings of this study showed that there was almost all positive effect of terminal
examination upon the students of private schools in comparison to the students of
public schools. Teachers of private schools were more satisfied with the
achievement of their students whereas the teachers of public schools were not
satisfied with the achievements or progress of their students.
I have divided this thesis into four chapters: Introduction, Methodology, Analysis
and Interpretation, and Findings and Recommendations. The first chapter deals
with the general background, review of literature, objectives and the significance
of the study. The second chapter contains the methodology which is sub-divided as
the sources of data, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data
collection and the limitations of the study. The third chapter includes the analysis
and interpretation of the obtained data from the field. The last or the fourth chapter
comprises the findings and recommendations for pedagogical implications.
