Abstract
This thesis studies Karna Shakya’s effort to motivate Nepalese to have patriotic feelings
in Paradise in Our Backyard. In this study, the text, Paradise in Our Backyard, is analyzed from
the theoretical perspectives of patriotism and its major objective is to expose Shakya’s patriotic
values and analyze the significance of patriotism for nation’s prosperity and development.
Patriotism is considered as emotional attachment to a nation which individuals recognize as their
homeland. It is a love for nation that makes person loyal, supportive, defensive and responsible
to the nation and actively participates in the process of development, progress and prosperity of
the country he/she belongs to. Nepal has been plunged into darkness because of political unrest
and long unsettled conflicts which further led people to extreme frustration, suffering and
negativity. In this context, Shakya’s effort in this text is to revive positive thought, hope and love
for nation into Nepalese specially youths who have lost their hope for better future in Nepal.
Nepal has plenty of opportunities and potentialities; it is rich in both natural resources and
cultural diversities which can be used for economic growth in Nepal. Therefore, Shakya
motivates to have positive eyes to see positive achievements, creative minds to recognize
potential opportunities, active hands to make them work and patriotic feelings to unite people for
development and prosperity of Nepal
