An Analysis of Style: A Textbook for BDS First Year

Abstract

This research work attempts to find out the physical and academic aspects of the English textbook Style,for BBS first year at Tribhuvan University. The findings of the book have been made on the basis of students' and teachers’ perception,theoretical framework for textbook analysis and the objectives listed in the curriculum. For this purpose,the researcher himself studied the textbook and prepared questionnaire containing 74 close-ended and 12 open-ended questions and administered at BBS programme running campuses in Biratnagar. The population of the study consisted of 15 English teachers and 25 students who have been teaching and studying in respective campuses. The study found out that this English textbook for BBS is based on communicative approach to language teaching and learning. The writing skill is highly emphasized with standard style. The physical quality of the book is normally good. The exercises included in the textbook mostly involve the students individually with writing skills.The content includes diverse area of knowledge. Yet the textbook has some drawbacks which are given in unit five. The study consists of five chapters.Chapter one consists of general background,introduction to the textbook, objective of the study, significance of the study etc.Chapter two deals with the review of the related literature and conceptual framework.Chapter three deals with methodology.It encompasses source of data, population of the study, sample population and sampling procedure, tools for data collection,process of data collection and limitations of study.Chapter four includes analysis and interpretation of data, analysis of the book on the basis of conceptual framework with the perception of teachers and students.Chapter five consists of summary, conclusion and implications.
