Abstract
The thesis entitled "A Semantic Analysis of English and Thulung Rai
Verbs" attempts to find out the semantic similarities and differences between
the verbs of the English and Thulung languages. The data for the English verbs
were collected from various dictionaries and thesauruses. Similarly, the data
for the Thulung verbs were collected through both the structured and
unstructured interviews with fifty Thulung Rai native speakers from the
different parts of Jhapa district. Monthly magazines and dictionaries of the
Thulung Rai language were also consulted as the secondary sources. The
collected data were compared and contrasted for the semantic description of
both languages on the basis of convergence and divergence, one to one
correlation, semantic inclusion and semantic overlapping of meaning. It was
found that English verbs have wider range of coverage in meaning than the
Thulung verbs. The similarities between the English and Thulung Rai verbs are
rare. In terms of semantic equivalence as is the universal linguistic rule so was
the case of semantic overlapping and equivalence system in the both
languages.
