Abstract

This research studies the split self of the protagonist of the novel The Sorrowsof Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe from the perspective of Lacanian psychoanalysis. It explores the psyche of the protagonist, who is guided by split self and that very spilt self leads him towards self–destruction. Werther cannot live full-fledged happy life because of deceitful love. That deceitful love makes Werther’s life very painful which he cannot endure in the absence of Lotte. So, to get easy exit from this exhausted life Werther ultimately commits suicide.
