Apologies in Tharu and English: A Comparative Study

Abstract
This thesis entitled"APOLOGIES IN THARU AND ENGLISH:A COMPARATIVE
STUDY”tries to identify and compare the forms of apologies and excuses uses in
English and Tharu. In order to carry out this research,30 native speakers of English
and 30 native speakers of Tharus were selected as respondents. Purposive non-random
sampling procedure was used for selection of respondents. Interview schedule were
employed to collect data.On the basis of the collected data, the comparison between
English and Tharu was done using descriptive statistical tools.The major findings of
the study showed that English native speakers were more apologetic and formal than
Tharu native speakers,while apologing and expressing excuses. In English, various
number of apologetic and excuses exponents are used than in Tharu. But the Tharu
speakers used more apology and excuses exponents followed by repairment than
English speakers.Regarding the level of formality both language users were formal
with their teachers,strangers and miscellaneous and informal with friends, neighbours
and relatives.
This thesis consists of four chapters. The first is introduction which contains general
background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of
the study. The second chapter is methodology which includes sources of data, Sample
population of the study, sampling procedure,tools for data collection, process of data
collection,and limitations of the study. The third chapter contains analysis and
interpretation of data and the fourth chapter deals with finding and recommendations
of the study. In the final section of the study references and appendices are included.
