Negative and Interrogative Transformations in Awadhi and English

Abstract

This thesis entitled Negative and Interrogative Transformation in Awadhi and English Languages is an attempt to identify the process of negative and interrogative transformations and to compare and contrast Awadhi with those of English. The researcher utilized both primary and secondary sources of data. The sample population consists of sixty native speakers of the Awadhi language in Banke district. Negative and Interrogative Transformation processes of English were taken from secondary sources of data. The major findings of the study were: the negative marker of English is not or n’t which is placed after an auxiliary verb whereas the negative marker in Awadhi is naai which precedes the main verb and sometimes at the middle and the relational verb; the same Awadhi negative marker naai occurs in imperative sentences. In yes/no question; an auxiliary verb occurs in the beginning of the sentence in English whereas the yes/no question marker kaa is introduced and placed in the beginning of the sentence in Awadhi. This thesis contains four chapters: The first chapter is an introductory one which provides information on language (English and Awadhi), contrastive analysis and so on. The second chapter deals with methodology which was applied to carry out the research. It includes the sources of data, population, sampling procedures, process of data collection and the like. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of the data. It finds out similarities and differences between the languages. The fourth chapter presents the findings and recommendations.
