Abstract
This study entitled “Place and Time Deixis in Doteli Language” aimed to
find out the place and time deixis used in Doteli language and compare and
contrast the place and time deictic expression of Doteli with those of English.
This study also focused on the different aspects of place and time deixis of
Doteli language. For this study, I selected a sample of forty Doteli native
speakers from Jorayal Rural Municipality of Doti district. The sample was
selected by using simple random sampling procedure. A set of questionnaire
was used as the tool for data collection. English deictic expressions were taken
from secondary sources. The data were analyzed and interpreted descriptively
and statistically by using tables and illustrations. The major findings of this
study showed that Doteli has a complex deixis system due to the existence of
honorific distinction, proximal and distal distinction, gestural and non-gestural
distinction. There have been found proximal and distal distinction, gestural and
non- gestural distinction and pure and impure distinction regarding Doteli place
and time deictic expressions. The next major findings of the study showed that
English is richer than Doteli because different English place deictic expressions
have the same equivalent term in Doteli language in place deixis system and
Doteli is richer than English because same terms in English can be represented
by different terms in Doteli language in time deixis system.
This study consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction which
includes the background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of
the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitation of the
study and operational definition of the key terms. Likewise, the second chapter
deals with the review of related theoretical and empirical literature,
implications of the review for the study and conceptual framework. Similarly,
the third chapter incorporates with design and methods of the study,
population, sample and sampling strategy, data collection tools and techniques,
sources of data, data collection procedures, data analysis and interpretation
procedures and ethical considerations. The fourth chapter deals with the
