Sita as a Subaltern Woman in R. K. Narayan’s The Abduction of Sita

Abstract

This dissertation explores the protagonist, Sita, as a Subaltern Woman in R. K. Narayan’s novel The Abduction of Sita. In The Abduction of Sita, Sita is objectified as a socially excluded, exiled, and subjugated like any other woman in the patriarchal society though she, in the Hindu Mythology, is a pious goddess and is thus worshipped along with her husband ‘Maryada Purusottam’ Rama. She has got to bear the stigma of a woman, who has passed her years with another man, i.e., Ravana. Later on, she is forced to undergo a fire test to prove her sanctity.
