Abstract
The present study entitled Role of Recasts in Developing Appropriacy and
Accuracy in Students' Performance intended to show the effectiveness of
recasts in the second language learning especially in simulated English
speaking environment. Altogether, 17 students had been selected studying at
Marigold Secondary School, Tikapur, Kailali through non-random purposive
sampling procedure to accomplish the research. Prior to the intervention, a set
of questionnaire was prepared as a research tool to collect required information
for the study. The same test item was used for pre-test and post-test. Both
primary and secondary sources of data were used. Having prepared the required
research tools, I started teaching at the selected school based upon the
objectives of the research methodology. The total teaching periods were 25
including all five grammatical items-tense, voice, modal verbs, prepositions
and tag-questions respectively and each grammatical item carried 10 marks.
The findings showed that recast as an implicit negative feedback can affect
students’ attempts to communicate and enhance learning the English language.
Thus, recasts proved to be one of the best techniques, especially for those
students with higher level of language proficiency.
This thesis consists of four parts. The first chapter consists of general
background, second language acquisition, classroom interaction, different types
of feedback, introduction and theoretical value of recast and process of action
research. Chapter two deals with the methodology, sources of data: primary
and secondary sources of data, population, sampling population and sampling
procedure, tools for the study, the process of data collection and limitations of
the study. Chapter three basically deals with the analysis and interpretations of
the data collected from the informants. Chapter four discusses the findings of
the study. Some recommendations are drawn and some pedagogical
implications have been made being based on the findings. In the final section of
the study, the references and appendices are included.
