Abstract
This study entitled Practices of Selecting ELT Textbooks in Institutional
Schools aimed to explore the reasons behind the selection of textbooks in institutional
school and to find out the ways of selection of textbooks in institutional school. It is
also one of the curious matters in academic field. I used qualitative research method
adopting narrative inquiry research design to carry out the study. The population of
the study included in Nuwakot and Kathmandu districts respectively. Three principals
and two scholars (a Professor and a Reader of central university campus, Kirtipur)
were selected as the sample for the study by using purposive non- random sampling
procedure. Required data were elicited conducting open ended in-depth interview and
virtual mode. The data were analyzed by using thematic approach. From the analysis
and interpretation of the data, it was found that selection of textbooks from different
publications are distinguished from one another, some institutional schools are
selecting the textbooks for their benefit such as commission, discount, profit and
constructing building. Some of them have used the books as recommended by Private
and Boarding School’s Organization Nepal (PABSON) and National Private and
Boarding School’s Association (N-PABSON) while others have selected as per their
choices. It was also found that some textbooks are selected with the decision of
subject teacher committee and the principal under the PABSON. Furthermore, it was
also found that while selecting textbooks in institutional schools they follow the
guidelines of Curriculum Development Center (CDC).
This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter consists of background
of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions,
rationale of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions of the key
terms. Similarly, second chapter deals with the review of theoretical as well as
empirical literature and its implication for the study. Moreover, it also includes the
conceptual framework. Likewise, the third chapter incorporates the research
methodology of the study which covers design and method of the study, population,
sample and sampling strategy, research tools, sources of data, data collection
procedures, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. In the similar view,
the fourth chapter includes the results and discussion. Finally, the fifth chapter
incorporates the conclusions and recommendations of this study.
