Abstract
Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri, which portrays a powerful picture of
the first and second generation who have settled in USA. The stories focus on the
problem of alienation, loneliness, self-realization, marginalization, displacement and
discontinuity in the cultural discourse. In the initial chapter this study has presented
the visit of Ruma's recently retired and widowed father to Ruma's new home in
Seattle where she lives with her American husband. These stories try to deals with
displacement on the backdrop of the diasporic milieu. Most of the characters feel the
distress, alienation and isolation occur when there is an unexpected change in
surroundings and environment.
