Abstract
The present dissertation titled "Struggle for Existence in Chekhov'sThe Seagull"
focuses on the characters who are struggling for their existenceamidstthe problematic
and frustrated conditions of their lives. The play studies the vanity of an actress, Arkadin;
the idleness of a fashionable novelist, Trigorin who dabbles in love; the hopelessness of
the actress' unloved son, Treplev; and the young girl, Nina,he adoresandwho is seduced
by the novelist. These and all other characters live their lives in frustration at every turn
of life. In everymomentof their lives, they encounter meaninglessness which adds
sufferingtotheir existence. To rescue themselves from their problematic meaningless
existence, they realize inevitability of struggle.
