Abstract

The thesis entitled "The Terms of Address of Limbu and English: AComparative Study" makes a comparison of the address terms used, intheLimbuand English languages. It explores how the native speakersof the two languagesmake choice of the terms of address; it compares the terms of address used forconsanguineal relations, affinal relations and social relations including friends,strangers, teachers, and students, people holding political, judicial positions,professionals like officer, doctor, nurse and other persons in Limbu community. The data was collected from seventy five native speakers of Limbu inPanchthar using stratified random sampling procedure. The sources of data for theterms of address in English were based on the previous researchworkscarried outin the Department of English Education, encyclopedias etc. The researcher found out that theLimbu language is richer in the terms ofaddress compared to Englishas it contains the terms that are not found in English, like 'tumyāhān', 'kundedānbā',Ŝawāme', 'lakhande', 'lokkandī' etc. In most ofthe cases of addressing system, the two languages differ. Usually, kinship terms are usedasaddress terms in Limbu but first names are used in English. This thesis contains four chapters: Introduction, Methodology, Analysisand Interpretation, and Findings and Recommendations. The first chapter contains general background, review of the relatedliterature, objectives of the study, significance of the study and definition ofspecific terms. The second chapter includes sources of data, population of the study,sample population, tools for data collection, process of data collection andLimitations of the study. Similarly, the third chapter comprises analysis and interpretation of the dataobtained. Finally, the fourth chapter contains the findings, recommendations andpedagogical implications.
