This thesis analyzes naturalistic predicaments in Hemingway’s novel To Have and Have Not. Hereditary, environmental and socio-cultural factors have played deterministic role in creating pathetic situation in the lives of characters. The character, especially, Harry Morgan, meets his tragic death preceding one after another naturalistic predicaments in this novel. Behind the tragic death of Harry and the pathetic situations of other characters too, environmental, hereditary as well as socio-cultural circumstances have played important role. Despite the characters desire to live decent life, it has been seen that different kinds of circumstances and situations compel them to suspend their free will thus lead them to their pathetic end. In order to show the relation between characters’ pathetic situations and environmental, hereditary and socio-cultural circumstances, naturalistic ideas have been utilized in this research work.
