Effectiveness of Van-Hiele Model of Learning Geometry at Primary Level (A Study of Kaski District)

Abstract

Most of the students feel Geometry as a difficult part of Mathematics. Various models and methods are developed to make learning Geometry easy. Among them one is Van-Hiele model of learning Geometry. Therefore, the researcher intended to determine the effectiveness of Van-Hiele model compared to the conventional method of Geometry learning on the following objectives: • to examine the effectiveness of Van-Hiele model of learning Geometry at primary level. • to examine the Gender-wise effectiveness of learning Geometry at primary level. This study was experimental study conducted at Grade V students of Kaski district. In order to fulfill the objectives of the study the researcher chose post-test only equivalent group design. 28 students were selected as a sample from class V of Harvard Academy, Pokhara-15, Kolpatan. They were divided into two groups as an experimental and control. To make the equal mean for the both groups the researcher has taken the achievement scores of each students of mathematics from the final examination of class four which was taken by the school. Experimental group and control group were taught the same topic by using Van-Hiele model and conventional method respectively. The duration of the experimental teaching was two weeks only. After completing the experimental teaching, the standardized achievement test prepared by the researcher was administrated in the both groups of the students. The achievement mean scores were calculated. The difference in mean achievement scores were tested by two tailed t-test at  = 0.05, showed that Van-Hiele model of learning was better achievement than the conventional method of learning Geometry. Hence, this study reveals that the Van-Hiele model is more effective than the conventional method in learning geometry at primary level.
