Abstract
The challenging problem of population growth attracts everyone to find the solution. Since
governmental and non-governmental policy and programme had lunched the growth rate did not
reduce hopefully. So, it is necessary to study about knowledge, attitude and practice of using
contraceptive devices. This study was under taken for getting the knowledge, attitude and
practice among Chhetri and Yakkha communities about using contraceptive devices of family
planning in this background.
It studies on "Use of Contraceptive Devices between Chhetri and Yakkha Community at
Mamling VDC of Sankhuwa sava district". The objectives were to find out the existing condition
of contraceptive devices of both Chhetri and Yakkha Community. It is descriptive types of study
included 82 (age group of 15-49 years) married women by convenient sampling method. The
primary data was collected from the means of interview schedule. The collected data was coded,
edited and processed manually; calculation of percentage was major statistical measure for
analyzing and interpretation the data.
The study revealed that, socio-economic status is medium in this VDC. About 83.46 percent
Chhetri and 66.05 percent Yakkha were literate and majority of Chhetri and Yakkha respondents
engaged in Agriculture. It shows 48.83 percent Chhetri and 30.77 percent Yakkha respondent
household annual income was above fifty thousand to one lakh. 88.38 percent Chhetri and 79.49
percent Yakkha respondents were familiar with at least one contraceptive device. 76.74 percent
Chhetri and 63.88 percent Yakkha respondents were using the contraceptive devices. Among
Chhetri 90 percent knew about the condom, 97.59 percent knew about the pills, 60 percent knew
about the IUD, 97.5 percent knew about the Depo, 62.5 percent knew about the Implant and 70
percent knew about the male and female sterilization. Among Yakkha, 88.23 percent knew about
the condom, 97.05 percent knew about the pills, 61.76 percent knew about the IUD, 91.18
percent knew about the Depo, 62.5 percent knew about the Implant and 87.65 percent knew
about the male and female sterilization. Most of the respondents of this study area said that
Health post is an important source of contraceptives devices.
Birth spacing view was above 4 years from 76.75 percent Chhetri and 41.02 percent Yakkha
respondents. 46.52 percent Chhetri respondents were used contraceptive for limiting birth and
44.87 percent Yakkha were used for birth control.
The study shows that Chhetri were comparatively in higher favor of contraceptive devices
having more knowledge about it positive attitude and small family size than Yakkha community.
At present, people of both communities have been trying to make better life style using
contraceptive devices. But most of the people want to use temporary devices than sterilization.
From this study, the researcher has given suggestion to the concerned authorities and institutions
as well as for further researcher. All the sectors related to the aspect of contraceptive devices
should conduct educational programme to provide better information. Furthermore, such types of
studies are necessary conducted at national level.
