The thesis entitled "Social Repression of Pleasures in Nicholas Sparks' A Walk
to Remember" is an attempt to expose how an individual's psychological pursuit of
happiness is suppressed by society. The fiction A Walk to Remember is analyzed to find
out the output of love relation between characters and its effects on characters' mind.
Landon and Jamie are the major characters of the novel. Why Landon expresses his
suppressed memories at his old age is analyzed by using various aspects of
psychoanalysis. It is shown that the social life of an individual is implicitly behavioral
and imprisoned in a series of social assumptions. It is concluded that individual's desires
and pleasures are repressed by the society. So, individual's psyche is formed in
antagonistic relation between his pleasure seeking tendencies and the society that
suppresses them.
