Abstract
This thesis makes a study of Chepang performance culture under the title of “The
Importance of Being a Pande: A Performative Reading of the Shamanistic Practices in
Chepang Community”. The research reveals that Pande as the leader of the Chepang
community performs great many roles and responsibilities as part of fulfilling cultural
demands. Discussing his or her roles in the continuity and change state of his or her
communities can reveal to us great many features of the Chepang world. Pande,a
performer of great many rituals that the Chepangs live by do not only help his people
to communicate with their ancestors and gods but also can act to help people like us to
know about the views that the Chepangs live by.
