Abstract

The present study entitled A Comparative Study on Gender based Strategies Used in Teaching Speaking Skill has main objectives to explore the strategies used by English teachers in teaching speaking skill at basic level and examine and compare gender-based variation on the use of strategies while teaching speaking.The required data were collected by using close-ended and open-ended questionnaire.The total samples were forty English language teachers(20 maleand 20 female)from basic schools of Ilam and Jhapa districts. To take the sample for the study, I adopted random sampling procedures. I analyzed and interpreted the collected data from descriptive and statistical point of view.After the analysis and interpretations of data, it was found that narration, role play, correcting,reading aloud, discussion and asking information etc. were often used as strategies to teach speaking skills. Gender variation seen on percentage in using strategies for teaching speaking. Similarly,male and female teachers adopt different strategies to teach asking, responding, grammar, pronunciation, accuracy and conversation for the development of speaking skill. This study consists of fivechapters. Chapter one deals with introduction which includes background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study,research questions, significance of the study, delimitation of the study and operational definitions of the key teams.And,Chapter two deals with the review of the different literatures and conceptual framework of the research.Similarly,chapter three deals with the methodology adopted for the study in terms of sources of data,population of the study, sampling procedure, tools and process of data collection and ethical consideration.Likewise, chapter four contains the analysis and interpretation of the data collected from informants.Finally, chapter five deals with the findings, conclusion and recommendations of the study.
