Abstract
The present study entitled Role of British Council in Developing ELT Situation of Nepal aimed to explore the current role and impact of British Council in developing ELT situation of Nepal. I also aimed to identify the benefits of British Council in professional development of teachers involved in the field of ELT and to suggest some pedagogical implications. The primary data was collected from the forty primary level English language teachers and school management committee from Lamjung district who were selected by using the non-random judgmental sampling procedures. The data were obtained from the respondents through the close-ended and open-ended questionnaire. The data was also collected withthe help of interview. The interview consistedof open-ended questions. The systematically collected data have been analyzed and interpreted descriptively using simple statistical tools.More than sixty percent of respondents said that British Council has a great contribution to the delivery of language course, organizing workshops and seminars, teacher training and conducting IELTS examination. Similarly, a large number of informants said that British Council has been helping in the use of appropriate methods and strategies in the field of ELT and has been working as an umbrella organization for other organizations working in the same field.The study shows that British Council has a great impact on enhancing the professionalism of the persons involved in the field of ELT and these professionals have positive attitude towards it. Majority of the teachers are satisfied with the current services,programs and practice of British Council.
This study consists of five chapters. The first chapter deals with general introduction,statement of the problem, rationaleof the study, objective of the study, research question,significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definition of the keyitems.Chapter two deals with review of related literature, implication of the review of thestudy and theoretical/conceptual framework. The third chapter presents the design of thestudy, population and sample, sampling procedures, sources of data, tools, data collection procedures, data analysis and interpretation procedures. Chapter four includes results and discussion/interpretation. Thechapter five deals with summary; conclusion; and implication for policy level, practice level and further research. Finally, this chapter is followed by the references and appendices/questionnaire.
