The Subject-Verb Agreement in The English language and Achhami Dialect

Abstract

The present study entitled Subject-Verb Agreement in English and AchhamiDialectof Nepalwas intended to show the comparison of subject-verbagreement system between English and Achhami dialect. I carriedout myresearch using non-random purposive sampling procedure and fifty informantsof Tikapur Municipality of Kailali were taken as sample. A set of questionnairewas prepared as a research tool for the elicitation of the required informationfor the study. Though there are differences between English and Achhami somesimilarities are also found. Both English and Achhami verbs agree in thecategories of number. Tone is raising in yes/no questions in both languages.Both languages have three person system i.e. 1 x st , 2 nd and 3 rd . Similarly, there isdifference in the basic word order between two languages. English followsSVO pattern and Achhami follows SOV pattern. There is no differencebetween simple past and present perfect in Achhami but there is difference inEnglish. Achhami verbs and adjectives also agree in the categories of genderwhich is not found in English. Achhami verbs agree with the honorific subjectsbut it is not found in English. This thesis is divided into four main chapters and other sub-chapters. The firstchapter deals with general background, the English language, LinguisticScenario of Nepal, dialects, a short introduction of Achham District andAchhami dialect, CA analysis, subject-verb agreement system of English,review of the related literature; and objectives and significance of the study.The second chapter is concerned with the methodology used in the study. Itincludes sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, tools fordata collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The thirdchapter provides the comprehensive picture of the analysis and interpretation ofthe data. It includes subject-verb agreement system of Achhami dialect withexamples and its comparison with that of the English language. The finalchapter lists the major findings and recommendations of the study.
