Item A study on grade twelve students' proficiency on communicative functions in English(2015) Thapa, Deepak; Padam Lal BharatiABSTRACT This research is an effort to find out the students' proficiency in using the appropriate expressions of language to serve various communicative functions in the given situations. The communicative functions against which the students' proficiency tested were selected from those included in the textbook at Grade 11 of HSEB namely 'Meanings into Words, Intermediate Student's Book ' on the basis of most common functions that are likely to occur in everyday communicative life in general. So, primarily this research is to see how far the students who completed their Grade 11 in the academic year 2070/71 the textbook mentioned which primarily deal with reading and writing skills in English could show the proficiency in using those communicative functions in the extended settings of daily communication. In order to carry out this study the researcher collected data from the Grade 12 (academic year 2071/72) students studying in the campuses/schools of Khairahani Municipality, Chitwan District. The total sample population of the study comprised 120 students and they were selected by using stratified random sampling procedure. The tools that the researcher made use of were two types of test items carrying 25 full marks each: receptive in which students were to recognize the expressions appropriate to serve various communicative functions in the given situations and productive in which students had to produce the appropriate expressions on their own to fulfill various communicative functions in the given situations. While coding students' responses, each appropriate receptive answer was assigned 1 score and 2 score for the correct productive response. The scores obtained from the students were tabulated on the basis of variables specified. On the basis of the collected data the students' proficiency in using appropriate expressions of language to serve those communicative functions was determined by using simple statistical tools such as average and percentage. The findings of the study showed that the average communicative proficiency of the students as a whole was 46.06 percent. The study consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with general background of the study, statement of the problem, research questions, and objectives of the study, significance of the study and delimitations of the study. Chapter two deals with the review of the theoretical literature, review of empirical literature, implication of the review for the study and conceptual framework. Chapter three entails design of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, field of the study, tools for data collection, and process of data collection. Chapter four contains analysis and interpretation of the data. The data have been analyzed under content- oriented variables and informant -oriented variables. Major findings are listed. Chapter five consists of conclusions and recommendations made on the basis of the findings.Item Effectiveness of suggestopaedia method in teaching english poetry(2016) Pandey, Govinda Prasad; Padam Lal BharatiAvailable in fulltextItem Professional development opportunities and obstacles to lower secondary level English language teachers(2015) Magar, Rabina Rana; Padam Lal BharatiAvailable in fulltextItem Proficiency in the use of articles of grade ten distinction scorers(2016) Basel, Laxman; Padam Lal BharatiThe researcher himself as a second language learner of English has been feeling difficulty in grasping English article system since his schooling till date. Similarly, as a secondary English teacher, he often noticed his students, high scorers and low scorers alike in the overall proficiency in English, using articles haphazardly. In this connection the present research entitled ‘Proficiency in the Use of Articles of Grade Ten Distinction Scorers' was carried out with the objectives to finding out the proficiency in the use of articles of grade ten distinction scorers of private and public schools of Chitwan district and compare and correlate their article proficiency scores with their overall proficiency scores in English of their one of the previous terminal examinations. For this research, the data obtained from both primary and secondary sources were studied and interpreted. Thirty grade ten distinction scorers in the overall proficiency in English were selected using both non-random quota sampling and judgmental sampling methods and administered the hundred-mark objective test to elicit the data. The collected data were studied applying simple statistical tools and interpreted descriptively after editing and codification. The study showed the sampled students were not as proficient in the use of articles as they were in the overall proficiency in English. The average score of overall proficiency in English was found 85.03 while it was only 70.43 in the use of articles. Similarly, only 5 students, i.e. 16.66 percent out of 30 distinction scorers in the overall proficiency in English were found scoring with distinction in the use of Articles.21 number of students, i.e. 70% of the sample population scoredfirst division in the use of articles. And four students, i.e., 13.33 % out of 30 sample sizes were found scoring second division in the use of articles. The spread of scores, i.e. standard deviation of the article scores was found 9.07 while it was 3.86 of the overall scores in English. The correlation between overall English scores and the scores in the use of articles was found 0.46. The research study has been organized on five chapters. The first chapter comprises of background information, statement of the problems, objectives, etc. The second chapter includes the literature review. Similarly, research methodology, study design, data analysis and interpretation procedures, etc. are discussed in the third chapter. The penultimate chapter includes analysis of data and interpretation of the result and summary. In the last chapter, conclusion and recommendations are presented.
