Abstract
The thesis entitledA Semantic Analysis of English and Bengali Verbsdealswith the systematic analysis of some verbs in the English and Bengalilanguages. The main aim of the study wasto find outcomparison and contrastof verbsystemsof two languages. The data was collected from primary as wellas secondary sources. Tocollect data from primary sources a set ofquestionnairewas used. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted interms of correlations of meaning, divergence and convergence of meaning,semantic inclusion and semantic overlapping. The main finding ofthis studyshowedthat the English and Bengali verbs have complete correlations ofmeaning in a very few cases and there is high degree of presence ofconvergence and divergence of meanings across languages. The lack of totalsemantic overlapping in the semantic system of selected words in these twolanguages was also found. This thesisconsists offour chapters: Introduction, Methodology, Analysis andInterpretation, and Findings and Recommendations. The first chapter dealswith the general background,literature review, objectives and significance ofthe study. The second chapter contains the methodology which is sub-chaptered as the sources of data, sampling procedure, tools for data collectionand the limitationsof the study. The third chapter includes the analysis andinterpretation of the data obtained from the field. The lastchapterpresentsthefindingsand recommendations of the study, which isfollowed by referencesandappendices.
