Abstract
This study makes an attempt to explore historical moments that fictionalize the vision of
Nehru inASituationinNewDelhibyapplyingtheperspectives of new historicism. The
researcher argues thatthe writer tries to show the situation of Indian politics during 1970s and
indirectly criticizes the political leader during that time as well as the researcher tries to explore
the writers dissatisfaction of unstable government.New historicism is a literary theory. It is
based on the idea that literature should be studied and interpreted within the context of both the
history of the author and the history of the critic.Itis an approach to view literary and non-
literary text simultaneously with referenceto thehistorical context and situation at the time of its
production. This novel combines history with personal recollections to show how Nehru helped
Indian to form a modern nation. To analysesthe real characters of Indian politics during 1970s
this research borrowstheoretical insights primarily from new historicismH. Aram Veescr’sThe
New Historicism, Stephen Greenblatt’sNewHistoricism,Michel Foucault’sThe History of
Sexuality, John BranniganNew historicism and Cultural Materialismhave been taken as
theoretical parameters.
