Communicative Proficiency of the Grade 9 students: A Case of Kathmandu District

Abstract

This study examines the communicative proficiency of grade 9students .Communicative use of the English language is the day ofdemand, unless one is proficient in communication he/shecan never fulfilhis feelings, desires,emotions, attitudes and experiences. Communicativeproficiency is not restricted to one skill and aspect. Here, the researchertries to measure comprehension, creation and interpretation ability of the9 th graders. The research work attempts to find out the ability to usecommunicative proficiency of grade 9 students, to do so, the researchercollected data from the students of grade nine of different eight schools inKathmandu District. The sample population consistedof 80 students whowhere taken using simple random sampling procedure. To elicit the require data, the researcher used both typesof sources;primary and secondary. The primary source of data consisted of 80students from 8 different schoolsof Kathmandu district 10 students fromeach school consisting of five boys and five girls. While collecting thedata, theresearcherdirectly visited the students with the prepared copiesof questions which consisted of mainly three types of questionscomprehension, creation and interpretation test. The full mark of the testwas 50 and itwasdividedintothreequestions. The main findings was that students of private schools were foundproficient thanthegovernment, in the same way studentsfrom urban areawere more talented than their rural contraries and boys were found betterthan girls . viii The students were more proficient in comprehension ability ratherthan creative and interpretativeabilities. They are able to understand thewords , phrases or the sentences and can respond to them but in theprocess of responding,most of the studentswerefound very creative anda few answered on the basis of their teachers notes, though in overallmost of the students were found communicative proficient according totheir level. The study consists of four chapters that are given below. Chapterone consists of general background, review of the related literature,objectives of the study, significance of the study. Chapter two, deals withthe methodology. It encompasses sources of data, population of the study,sample population, tools for data collection, process of data collectionand limitations of the study. Chapter three consist of analyze andinterpretation of the data: The data was analyzed taking differentvariables like private and public, male female and rural and urban.Chapter four consist of findings recommendations, some valuablesuggestions and conclusion. The main objective of this research was tofind out / determine the communicative ability of the 9 ix th graders Englishstudents.
