Using Native Language in ELT Classroom: A Study on Perception

Abstract

This research work entitled ‘Using Native Language in ELT Classroom: A Study on Perception’ has been carried out to find out the purpose of using native language in ELT classroom, its advantages and disadvantages and to digout the perceptions of teachers and students of secondary level regarding the use of native language in ELT classroom. The researcher used purposive non random sampling procedures to select twenty secondary level English language teachers and fifty students of grade nine and ten from Panchthar district.Two sets of questionnaire were used to gather the teachers' and students' perceptions. The data collected from the respondents were analyzed and

interpreted to meet the objectives of the study. It was found that the students

used their native language to ask questions and put their problems to their

teachers. On the other hand, the teachers used it for cultural translation and for

breaking the monotony of the students. Moreover, it was perceived that native

language was used to find out the main idea of the text in shorter time but it hindered developing communicative competence in the target language on the part of learners.

This study is divided into five chapters. Chapter one deals with introduction. It consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational

definitions of the key terms. Second chapter deals with the review of related literatures and conceptual framework. Likewise, third chapter includes the methods and procedures of the study. It consists of population and the sample

of the study, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, data collection

procedures and data analysis and interpretation procedures. The fourth chapter

deals with the results and discussions of the collected data. Similarly, the

collected data were described, analyzed and interpreted descriptively. Finally,

the last chapter deals with the summary, conclusion and interpretation on the basis of analyses and interpretation done.
