Abstract: This thesis entitled “Gain of Meaning in Translation: A Study on ‘Animal Farm” is an attempt to find out gain of meaning in translation. Furthermore, it aimed to explore techniques exploited to translate social and cultural terms from English to Nepali and vice a versa. Secondary sources of data were used in the study. Descriptive and analytical design along with qualitative data were used. To carry out this research, 70 social and cultural terms and phrases were selected by using non-random judgmental sampling procedure from the novel ‘Animal Farm’. The translator translated the terms ‘memorial’, ‘big barn’, ‘beer’ and ‘blacksmithing’ into Nepali language as ‘punya tithi’, ‘thulo khalo’, ‘jaand/ suruwa’ and ‘kami kam’ respectively that are examples of gainging meaning in translation. Ten different techniques were found in translation to gain meaning in rendering novel Animal Farm into Nepali. They are functional equivalence, literal translation, sense relation, borrowing, definition, transliteration, addition, lexical creation, deletion and reduction. The whole thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one deals with the background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research question, significance of the study, delimitations of the study, operational definition of the key terms. Second chapter consists of review of theoretical literature, review of empirical literature/ previous studies, implications of the review for the study, conceptual framework etc. Chapter three includes methods and procedures of the study. It contains the design and method of the study, population, sample and sampling procedure, study area/ field, data collection tools and techniques, data collection procedures and data analysis and interpretation procedure. Analysis and interpretation of results have been discussed in chapter four. Ultimately, conclusions and recommendations have been discussed in chapter five.
