Abstract: This study entitled "Reading and Writing StrategiesUsed byGradeXIStudents"is basically a descriptivestudy. It is an attempt to find out thereading and writing strategies used by grade XI students in learningEnglish. In order to carry out this study, the researcher selected fourdifferent schools from Syngja district through purposive non-randomsampling procedure. Sixteen students from each school were purposivelyselected as the sample of this study. The researcher used both primaryand secondary sources of data. A set of survey questionnaire related toreading and writing strategies was used as the tool for data collection.After analyzing the collected data, it is found that to develop reading skillin English, the students of grade XI, majoring in English read Englishstories, poem, newspaper and magazinesand any materials as they foundsuitable for themselves. Similarly to develop good writing skill, studentsof grade XI were found to prepare their own note, do homeworkregularly, note down the main points during teacher explanation and tookpart in essaycompetition organized by the college. This work comprises five chapters. Chapter one deals with theintroduction which consists of general back ground, statement of theproblems, rationale of the study, objectives of the study, researchquestions, significance of the study, delimitation of the study andoperational definitions of the key terms. Chapter two deals with thereview of related literatures and conceptual framework. It consists ofreview of related empirical literature, implication of the reviewfor study,theatrical literature and conceptual framework. The third chapter is aboutthe methodology used in the process of this study. Namely, they are :population and sample, sampling procedure, the tools adopted, theprocess of data collection and interpretation. The fourth chapter is the 9 presentation of results and discussions of the collect data. The discussionis incorporated in to two categories as reading strategies and writingstrategies used by the students. The final chapter is about the summary,conclusion and implications of the study. The implication furtherincorporated into policy level, practice level and further research area.
