Abstract: The thesis entitled “Challenges Faced by Chamling Learners Learning English”is an attempttofind out the challenges faced by the Chamling learners learningEnglish and its possible causesin class teninKhotang district. For thispurpose, I used both primary and secondary sources.Asthesecondary sourcesof the data some books and journalslikeAsher (1994),Kansakar (1996)andMitchell and Myles (2004) were consulted.The Secondary English teachersand the Chamling learners were the primary sourcesfor this study.The surveydesign was used to accomplish this research work.Iused judgmental samplingprocedure to sample the population.The questionnaires andobservation forms,were used as research tools for datacollection.It wasfound that the ChamlinglearnerslearningEnglishhadfacedseveral challenges related to physicalfacilities, classroom management, teaching materials, teaching methods andtechnique.More importantly,the study discovered that challengeswereprimarilycreated due to poor economic conditions of schooland students, lackof enough exposure in English, lack of interest of the Chamling students inlearning English, government policy, andnegligence of DEO, poorcomprehension rate and mother tongue interference. This thesisconsists offivechapters. The firstchapter deals with theintroduction of the topic in whichbackground, statement of the problem,rationale of the study, objectives of the study, research questions, significanceof the study, delimitations of the study, and operational definitions ofthe keytermshave been discussed.The second chapter covers the areas ofreview ofrelated literature and conceptual framework; review of the related literature,implications of the review for the study, conceptual framework, and theoreticalframework.Theoretical framework includes language situation in Nepal,situation of English in Nepal, a glimpse of the Chamling language,multilingualism and Chamling learners, second language or foreign language,the factors affecting foreign language learning.Thethird chapter deals with themethods and procedures of the studywhich,in turn, includesdesign of thestudy,population and sample, sampling procedure, data collection tools, datacollection procedure and data analysis and interpretation procedure. Likewise,the fourth chapter aims at presenting the resultanddiscussion. Fifth chapterdeals with summary, conclusions, and implications.
