Abstract: The study “Contraceptive knowledge and use in Tharu Community: a case study ofSaudiyar VDC-4, Dang” has been carried out using primary data from 147 households and170 respondents of currently married women of age group 15-49 years in the study area. Inthis study knowledge, use and reasons for non-use of contraceptives among currently marriedwomen aged 15-49 is examined. The study has found that knowledge of family planning is almost universal and cent-percentrespondents in the study are familiar with modern method of contraceptives. Women with educational status trends to have more knowledge on family planning methods.Among methods, respondents have good knowledge on female sterilization and injectables.Out of the total respondents, 65.9 percent are ever users, 44.7 percent are current users for atleast one contraceptive method, 55.3 percent of respondents did not use family planningmethod, because of various problems such as desire of son, fear of side effects, religionbarrier etc. Generally there is positive relationship between number of leaving children andcontraceptive use. It also showed positive relation ship between educational level andknowledge attitude and use of contraceptives. The intension of the non-user respondents of contraceptives methods towards contraceptiveis found different. 46.5 percent are interested to use contraceptive methods in future, whereas 5.3 percentages not decided yet and 3.5 say don’t know. Among 76 respondents who are currently using contraceptives methods 25 respondents saidthat there is different types of side effect of contraceptive methods. There are curvilinear relationship with number of living children education of women andcurrent use of contraceptives. The positive relationship has been obtained with occupation ofwomen, number of living sons and current use of contraceptives.
