Abstract: This thesis entitled PROFICIENCY IN THE USE OF PREPOSITIONS OF TIME BY THE STUDENTS OF GRADE EIGHT makes a comparison of the students of grade eight studying in government aided schools of Dhankuta and Morang districts in the use of prepositions of time. The objectives of the study were to find out the proficiency level of the students and to compare it in terms of gender, district and type of test items. For the study, one hundred and sixty students of grade eight studying in government aided schools from Dhankuta and Morang districts were the sample population. The population includes eighty girls and eighty boys. The main tool for the study was a test paper consisting 80 items in total. The researcher found that the overall proficiency of the students is 35.61%. Students of Dhankuta district are more proficient than the students of Morang district by 0.55%. The boy students are more proficient than the girl students by 1.37%. Students obtained the highest percentage of average mark i.e. 45.25% in test item-D i.e. in right/wrong out of the four types of test items viz. multiple choices, fill in the blanks, cloze and right/wrong. The thesis comprises of four chapters .The first chapter consists of general background, grammar and its significance, proficiency and proficiency test, prepositions and types of prepositions, review of related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two consists of the methodology adopted for the study in which the source of data, population of the study, tools for the collection of data, process of data collection and limitation of the study are mentioned. Chapter three contains the analysis and interpretation of the data. It presents the data through simple statistical method. The number of the students, their sex and the marks they obtained in each test items are presented in the tables. Chapter four consists of the findings of the study and on the basis of the findings some recommendations for pedagogical implication have been mentioned in this chapter. References and appendices are given in the end.
