Abstract: The research entitled "Grammatical Proficiency of Secondary Level Students "is an attempt to find out the grammatical proficiency of tenth graders and to compare the students of government aided schools and private schools in grammatical proficiency. In order to do so, the researcher collected data from 10th graders of Surkhet district. The sample population consisted of 120 students who were selected by simple random sampling method. Multiple choice items were designed to test and compare their proficiency in 11 grammatical topics. Eight multiple choice items were used having 3 options from each grammatical topics and 88 multiple choice items, in total, were used for the test. For the analysis and interpretation of data, test papers were checked and scores were given. The scores obtained by the students were counted, tabulated and interpreted employing quantitative and descriptive method. Quantitative method includes simple statistical tools of percentage and bar diagram and descriptive method includes simple interpretation and explanation of the data computed. The research findings, in total, show that the students had the best proficiency in the use of 'connectives' and the poorest proficiency in the use of 'concord', On the other hand, the students of private schools were found having far better proficiency than the proficiency of the students of the government aided schools. It consists of the general background of the study, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study, types of teaching methods and techniques of teaching grammar etc. Chapter two describes the methodology applied in order to carry out this research. It encompasses sources of data, sample population of the study, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of the data. The data are analyzed and interpreted using the statistical tools like tables and percentage and they are displayed using bar diagram in appendices. Chapter four incorporates findings and recommendations of the study. Based on the analysis and interpretation, some significant findings are listed. Based on these findings, some recommendations for pedagogical implications are made. References and appendices follow this chapter.
