Abstract: Present study entitled ‘Proficiency of Grade-XII Students in Listening English Songs’ aims at finding out the proficiency of grade XII students in listening skill through four types of English songs viz. pop, rock, love and sentimental at present. The tool used to collect the required data was the test item. The total sample size of the study was 40 students from 4 different institutions. The collected data were analyzed in a narration. In some cases, the data were also analyzed and interpreted with the statistical tool like percentage. On the basis of the findings derived from the analysis and interpretation, some recommendations have been suggested to improve the existing pedagogical situation. The study found that only 12.5% of the students of grade XII were proficient in getting through the maximum part of the English songs and 47.5% of the students could comprehend only 60 to 80% of the English songs. Other students could comprehend only about 50% of the English songs. But, 12.5% of the students could not understand even 40% of the English songs. By this, no students were found to be 100% proficient to understand the whole part of the English songs. Boys were found to be better than girls in listening to the English songs. Five percent of the girls were excellent at listening to the English songs whereas 20% of the boys seemed to be excellent at it. The study consists of four chapters. Chapter one includes general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with methodology i.e. how the research was carried out. It includes sources of data (both primary and secondary), sample population of the study, tools of the data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Likewise, chapter three includes the analysis and interpretation of the data. Chapter four incorporates findings and recommendations of the study. Here, on the basis of the analyzed data some findings have been listed and in turn on the basis of findings some recommendations have also been suggested. References and appendices are also included at last.
