Abstract: The present study entitled "Proverbs Used in Newspaper Articles and their NepaliEquivalents" is an attempt to examine the structure, frequency and cultural featuresof proverbs used in newspaper articles. Moreover, this study makes an attempt toobserve the Nepali equivalent of the English proverbs. The researcher appliedjudgmentalsampling which is based on the purpose and subjectivejudgmentsofthe researcher mainly based on the secondary sources of the data. Observation wasthe tool used for data collection. Altogether 51 proverbs were analyzed. Instructure mostly active voice, present tense and simple sentence have been foundbeing used in the respective national dailies. In the study of frequency theresearcher found that proverbs are not very frequent in the daily newspapers.Similarly, the study of cultural features concluded that some of the proverbs aredifferent in conveying the meanings due to the difference in culture. The terms thatare different are described in the study with their Nepali equivalence. This thesis is divided into four main chapters and other sub-chapters. The firstchapter deals with general background to the study, the English language, massmedia, a brief introduction of proverbs, structures of proverbs, proverbs and theEnglish language, the scope of proverbs and proverbs and newspaper articles. Thesecond chapter deals with the methodology adopted for carrying out the study. Itincludes sources of data, tools for data collection and some limitations of thestudy. Similarly, the third chapter presents analysis and interpretation of the datacollected for the study using simple statistical tools like table, percentage andfrequency. Finally, the fourth chapter presents the findings and somerecommendations of the study.
