Title: Asia Bond Monitor – November 2019
Authors: ADB
Issue Date: Nov-2019
Description: Emerging East Asia’s local currency bond market reached $15.2 trillion at the end of September 2019 on growth of 3.1% quarter-on-quarter and 13.0% year-on-year. Most emerging East Asian currencies strengthened against the US dollar between 31 August and 15 October. The trade conflict between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the United States (US) remains the primary downside risk. An economic slowdown in advanced economies as well as in the PRC also poses a risk to emerging East Asia. However, the monetary policy easing of central banks in advanced economies is benefiting the region’s financial environment. The theme chapter of this issue of the Asia Bond Monitor investigates the effect of bond market development on the risk-taking decisions of banks. Using bank-level data from developing markets around the world, the analysis finds that a well-functioning capital market can contribute to the soundness of the banking sector: bond market development reduces banks’ risks and supports credit creation. In addition, this issue examines the results of the AsianBondsOnline Annual Bond Market Liquidity Survey. It includes discussion boxes on PRC–US trade tensions and reform of the London Interbank Offered Rate. About the publication The quarterly Asia Bond Monitor reviews developments in emerging East Asian local currency bond markets. The report discusses key trends in the region’s bond markets, and the outlook, risks, and policy options. It covers the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the PRC; Hong Kong, China; and the Republic of Korea.
