dc.description.abstractThis thesis entitled “Request Forms inTharuand English”wasan attempt tofind out the request forms intheTharu language and compare and contrastthem with those of English. The researcher used both primary and secondarysourcesof data. The sample population of the study consisted of 80 nativespeakers of Tharu including educated and uneducated. Among80 informants,40 were educated and equalnumberof uneducated informants were there. Theresearcher used stratified random sampling procedure to sample the population.The interviewschedulefor uneducated and written questionnaire for educatedpopulation werethe research tools for the data collection. On the basis of thecollected data theanalysis and interpretation weredone descriptively andcomparatively with the help of tables, diagrams and illustrations.The findingshowed that Tharu native speakers were less polite thanEnglish nativespeakers and the Tharu people used 57.77% direct requests. This thesis contains four chapters viz. introduction, methodology, analysis andinterpretation, and finding and recommendations.The first chapter deals withintroduction which consists of general background, the EnglishlanguageinNepal, thelanguagesof Nepal, the Tharu language, language functions, therequest formsof English sentences, importance of requesting in language, anoverview of pragmatics, different views onpoliteness,need and importance ofCA,reviewoftherelated literature,objectives of thestudy, significance of thestudy and the definitions of the specific terms.The second chapters deals withmethodology, adopted for the study. It consists of sources of data, populationof the study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection and limitationsof thestudy. Similarly, the third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation ofthe data. It consistsofrequest forms in the Tharu language with illustrationsand comparison of the request forms of the Tharu language with those ofEnglish. Thefourth chapter dealswith the findings and recommendations.en_US
