Abstract: The aim of the study is to give a short description about the importance of NGOs in Nepal and A Case Study of Kumari Club (a local NGO) in Balkhu located in Tekusi 14 of Kathmandu district. Non governmental organizations are working in national development activities as a part of Governmental efforts and networks. NGOs have been initially incepted for offering relief works to the victims of war, epidemic or religious purpose. Now, they are not confined on those purposes only. After the effectiveness of the functions of NGOs, people with same interest started to formulate organizations for developmental work in non-governmental sector. NGOs should be registered with the authorities as desired by law. NGOs are known as voluntary, non-profit making, service-oriented, democratic in nature and result oriented non-beaurocratic and autonomous organizations. They have certain advantage in delivery of services to uneducated and poor rural people. The problems of developing countries could not be fulfilled by the state alone. Furthermore, in developing countries, planned programmes launched by the government have not been successfully implemented. So they are found as crucial alternative to ineffectiveness of state development activities. Thereafter NGOs have come as alternative development agents. Income generations, non formal education, group formation, primary health care, capacity building, poverty reduction etc. are thus perceived as the main concern areas of most developing countries. NGOs began their movement as welfare based organizations being largely motivated by Philanthropic and charity rendering services to the community. Although the indigenous structural outlets of Guthi, Parma, Dhikur, Bheja, Rodhi etc. functioned as the modern days NGOs, since a long period, it was not until the interception made by Tulasi Mehar as early as in 1926 initiated the Gandhi Charkha Pracharak Mahaguthi which was followed by Dayabir Singh Kansakar's Paropakar. The NGOs play vital role in poverty reduction through social mobilization, institutional development, establishment of micro enterprises, saving and credit facility, transfer of technology, agricultural transformation etc. Thus the research attempts to focus on various impacts of Kumari Club as a local NGO in Balkhu. The general objectives of the study is to findout the importance of NGOs in Nepal and the impact of Kumari Club in Balkhu of Kathmandu District while the specific objectives are : • To findout the importance of NGOs in Nepal, • To examine the impact of Kumari Club, • To assess the programmes carried out by Kumari Club at local level.
