Abstract: This thesis entitled ‘"Achievement of Modal Verbs by the Students of Grade Ten” is an attempt to find out the achievement of modal verbs included in the course of grade ten students and to compare the achievement between the students of private and government aided schools of Chitwan district. For this purpose I used both primary and secondary sources of data. The students of grade ten studying in Chitwan district were the primary sources and the English textbook of grade nine was the main source of the secondary data. The modal verbs were taken from this book to design test items. Then the researcher administered the test on 80 students selected from four different schools of Chitwan district. The researcher analyzed the correct responses as well as compared their achievement on the basis of the percentage of correct responses. It was found that the modal verb achievement of the tenth graders studying in Chitwan was good. Students of private schools obtained the higher percentage in comparison to the students of government aided schools. The study is divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the general background, review of the related literature, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter consists of the methodology in which the sources of data, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study are mentioned. Similarly, the third chapter comprises analysis and interpretation of the data. Finally, the fourth chapter contains the findings and recommendations of the study.
