Abstract: This research study attempts to analyse the ability in identifying andforming major word classes of the Higher Secondary level students. For the study,48 students from six higher secondary schools studying in Grade twelve ofEducation stream were selected. A test was administered to them in order tocollect the required data. Thedata were analyzed and their ability was determined. This study consists of four chapters. The first chapter introduces the studyin terms of general background, literature review, objectives of the study,significance of the study and definitions of the specific term. The second chapter gives an account of the methodology applied to carryout the research work. Mainly, sources of data (primary and secondary),population of the study, sample population, sample procedure, tools of datacollection, process of data collection and limitations of the study are explainedunder the second chapter 'Methodology'. The third chapter deals with the analysis, interpretation and presentation ofthe data. The marks obtained by the students are analyzed to find out their ability.Moreover, the data are analyzed in terms of sex, item, word class, school anddistrict. Tables, charts, graphs and some common statistical tools are alsoincluded.
