dc.description.abstractThe main purpose of this study was to find out the ability of gradeten students studying at various public schools of Kathmandu andChitwan to understand literary texts in terms of texts, sex, school anddistrict and to suggest some pedagogical implications. The researcher, to accomplish this study, prepared a questionnairefromthe selected texts and carried out pilot study on the students of JSS.The researcher selected three schools from each Kathmandu and Chitwandistrict using random sampling method. Twenty students were selectedfrom each school on the basis of odd and even roll number. After theselection of the students, he administered the test. Then the marksobtained by the students were analysed by using simple statistical toolslike mean, percentage, standard deviation and coefficient of variation. From the analysis, the researcher found that the students' ability tounderstand literary texts as a whole is 59.91%. The students were foundto have better understanding in prose than in poetry. The male studentswere found to have better understanding in both prose and poetry as awhole than that of their female counterparts. Similarly, in the comparisonof the students' ability to understand literary texts in terms of district, thestudents of Kathmandu were found to have better understanding than thatof the students ofChitwan in both prose and poetry. This study consists of four chapters. Chapter one consists ofgeneral background, review of the literature, objectives of the study,significance of the study and definitions of specific terms. Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted to carryout thisstudy. This chapter includes sources of data, population of the study,sampling procedure, tools for data collection, result of pilot study,process of data collection and limitation of the study. Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the rawdata obtained from the students. The researcher has anaylsed the datausing different statistical tools like mean, percentage, standard deviationand coefficient of variation. The last chapter deals with the findings of this research work andrecommendations made on the basis of the findings.en_US
