Abstract: This thesis entitled "Tense Marking System in Maithili and English" endeavors to compare and contrast tense marking system of Maithili and English languages. The researcher collected data from both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources of data were native speakers of Maithili language from Inaruwa Municipality of Sunsari district located in the southern part of Nepal. For the primary sources of data 50 native speakers of Maithili Language of Inaruwa Municipality were selected by using simple random sampling procedure. The sample of population was literate people who have passed SLC and above. The secondary sources of data were different books, theses, journals, Gorkha patra and Maithili Grammar. The thesis consists of four chapters. They are introduction, methodology, analysis and interpretation, findings and recommendation. Chapter one consists of general background, review of related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with methodology, sources of data, sampling procedure and limitations of study. Similarly, Chapter three which is the core of the thesis includes analysis and interpretation of the data. In this way, the fourth chapter includes the production of analysis and interpretation of the data, i.e. findings of the study and some recommendations made on the basis of the findings. Finally the references and the appendices which are necessary for the validation of the research are also presented.
