Abstract: This is a research study entitled ‘Action Verbs in Maithili and English’. This thesis attempts to compare and contrast the action verbs in Maithili and English. The tools used in this study were a set of questionnaire and the data were collected from primary and secondary sources. The native speakers of Maithili language in Laukahi, Narsingh, Bhokraha VDCs and Inaruwa Municipality of Sunsari district were the primary sources of data and different books, journals, papers, magazines and theses were used as the secondary sources of data. The sample population was 80 native speakers of Maithili language who would speak and write English as well. The researcher used the judgmental sampling procedure to sample the population. The questionnaire consisted of 80 action verbs in English. The set was given to the sample population to write the equivalent Maithili action verbs for them. After collecting the responses, the verbs were tabulated and compared. Again, the detailed analysis of the native speakers’ response was made and, accordingly findings and conclusions were presented. The analysis and interpretation of the data has been done descriptively. Differences and some other relevant facts have been presented in tables the major findings of this research are that both (English and Maithili) action verbs have the same definition and classifications but Maithili action verbs have only– ab or – al affixes at last whereas, English action verbs have different. This thesis includes four chapters. Chapter one discusses the introduction part i.e. general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with the methodology of the study. It encompasses sources of data, sampling procedure, research tools, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three includes the analysis and interpretation of the data. Chapter four consists of findings, recommendations and pedagogical implications of the study. The major findings of the research study are listed and finally some pedagogical implications are pointed out.
