Item Expressing likes and dislikes in english and Maithili ; A comparative study(2011) Aalam, Firoj; Dan Raj RegmiAbstract This thesis entitled “Expressing Likes and Dislikes in English and Maithili: A Comparative Study”.The main objective of the study is to examine the ways of espressing likes and dislikes in English and Maithili and compare them from functional perspective.The researcher utilized both primary and secondary sources of data. The first chapter is introductory in nature. It includes general background and a brief description of the Maithili language, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research methodology, review of literature, limitations of the study, and organization of the study. The second chapter deals with the study of expressing likes and dislikes in Maithili. It consists of the form of expressing likes and dislikes in Maithili, with various examples and interpretations, degrees of expression while expressing likes and dislikes and the form of degree while expressing dislikes by Maithili native speakers. The third chapter has presented the expressions of likes and dislikes in English. This chapter deals with the form of expressing likes and dislikes in English, the form of degrees when expressing likes, the form of degrees when expressing dislikes, and the placement of like and dislike verbs. The fourth chapter which is main focal point of this thesis shows some similarities and differences in English and Maithili languages in terms of expressing likes and dislikes. This chapter deals with the similarities of expressing likes in English and Maithili, the similarities of expressing dislikes in English and Maithili in terms of semantic level, the common expressions both in English and Maithili, and dissimilarities between English and Maithili in terms of expressing likes and dislikes. The fifth chapter includes some pedagogical implication and chapter six deals with the summary and conclusion of the whole dissertation which are found during the study.
