Item Conflict between Tradition and Modernity in Tawfiq Al-Hakim‘s The Song of Death(Central Department of English Kirtipur, Kathmandu, 2015) Shrestha, RameshThe present research entitled ―Conflict between Tradition and Modernity in Tawfiq al-Hakim‘s The Song of Death‖ explores contradictions, conflicts and shows disagreements and disparity prevalent in the mid-twentieth century Egyptian society. The concept of younger and older generation of the then society comes in to clash in many aspects of their life such as thinking, behavior, treatment and lifestyle. The playwright takes character of new generation as agent to get exposure to the modern values, which he tries to apply in the traditional rural Egyptian society. In doing so, there arise problems of clash between two different values as well as in the life of the characters. University education, free life, individualism, social law and justice and some of the values are associated with modernity, which the main character adopts in his life but these values do not go with the conventions of the traditional rural Egyptian society. The consequence is further suffering. Older generation is represented by Asakir and Mabruka and younger generation by Ilwan and Simeida. Ilwan always hopes for new ideas and gives priority to social law and justice and modern way of thinking over the rural Egyptian orthodoxy culture and tradition. But older generation especially Asakir is against it and opposes Ilwan in many aspects of changes. Ilwan hopes to change orthodoxical thinking of the then society by adopting modern way of thinking and social law and justice. To study these issues, the research takes the support of primarily the theoretical concepts of modernity. The research explores how conflict comes in to existence among the people of the society because of modernization.Item Impact of Reservoir Sedimentation on Hydroelectric Power Generation: Case Study of Kulekhani First Hydropower Station(Pulchowk Campus, 2019-11) Shrestha, RameshReservoir Hydropower Plants are more reliable than the Run-off Plants. Kulekhani First Hydropower Station is the reservoir type Hydropower Station. It is 60 MW plant and is very reliable power plant of Nepal. Electricity produced from each m3 of reservoir water is calculated as 1.27 kWh. Sedimentation data from the primary and secondary sources were taken for analysis. Trend lines and bar charts were used for analysis and forecasting purpose. The reservoir is being filled by sediment after its commissioning in 1982 and annual sedimentation rate in total volume is found to be 0.73 Mm3 and in active volume is found to be 0.65 Mm3 . With the decrease of the active volume, the energy generation capacity of KL1HPS is also decreasing at the rate of 826.46 MWh per year. It is estimated that active volume will be filled in about 2100 AD which means the estimated life is about 80 years from now. With the decrease of the active volume, the energy generation capacity of KL1HPS is also decreasing and after about 80 years the KL1HPS plant will be run off river plant. Use of sediment removal system will gradually decrease the sediment content in the reservoir. The time period for dredging of all the sediments in active volume is found to be about 8 years and total cost incurred is found to be NRs. 21.57 Billion with simple payback period of about 50 years. The time period for dry excavation of all the sediments in active volume is found to be about 1 year and total cost incurred is found to be NRs. 26.98 Billion with simple payback period of about 78 years.Item Listening Proficiency of Grade Eight Students(Department of English Education, 2007) Shrestha, RameshThis research study has been prepared to find out the listening proficiency and problems of eight graders studying in different schools of Thimi. 80 students of grade eight studying in different schools were the sample population for the study. The listening tests were administered to the students on various dates, to find out their proficiency and problems. In order to find out the problems two types of questionnaire for the teachers and students were used. It has been found that due to lack of physical facilities, teaching materials, students’ poor English background and not asking listening test in the terminal as well as in the final examination were the obstacles in obtaining the higher proficiency. This thesis comprises four chapters. The first chapter deals with the introduction of the topic in which general background of the study, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter includes the research methodology, dealing with source of data and population of the study, sampling procedure, research tools, the process of data collection, the limitation of the study and the definition of the specific terms. The third chapter covers the analysis and interpretation of the collected data with different tables and figures. Similarly the last chapter aims at presenting the findings and implications of the study and also some recommendation for the purpose of improving in the concerned field. Some suggestions made on the basis of the findings of the study have also been included in this chapter. References and appendices are presented in the final part of this study.
