Item Park–People Relationship in Shivapurinational Park, Central Nepal (A Case Study of Sundarijal VillageDevelopment Committee)(Department of Environmental Science, 2006) Shrestha, SamiraShivapuri National Park is the only national park in proximity to the capital and fallsentirely within the middle mountain range of Nepal. It is situated 12 km north ofdown town Kathmandu. It covers an area of 144 sq. km that touched23 VDCs ofKathmandu, Nuwakot and Sindhupalchowk districts. It is home for177species ofbirds, 102 species of butterflies and 21 species of mammals including sloth bear,langur monkey, leopard, barking deer. There are2,122 species of flora and16of themareendemicfloweringplants. The study entitled “Park-People Relationship inShivapuri National Park,Central Nepal: A Case Study of Sundarijal Village Development Committee”was conducted to(i)assess the quantity of crop loss due to wild animals(ii)identifythemost destructive wild animal (iii) identify the reasonsof conflict and(iv) studythe impact of localpeople on the park. Questionnaire survey was done in 100 households of six wards of Sundarijal VDCsince these wards entirely lie within the walled boundary of Shivapuri National Park.Simple random sampling methodwas conducted to assess crop damage by wildanimals for one year from April 2005 to April 2006. The study showed that the total cropdamage by wild animals was1700.74quintals.Thelosspercentage of wheat was found to be the highest with respect to theexpectedproduction. The study also showedwild boar as the most destructive wild animalsfollowedby monkey. Crop damagewas the most serious problem leading to conflictbetween the local people and the park authorities. Large number of householdsreported the crop damageas the leading cause of conflict. In the study, it was alsofound that the firewood and fodder collection by the local people from the nationalpark wereothermajor problemsin the conservation activities leading to conflict.
