Item Effectiveness of Communicative Language Teaching in Teaching Communicative Functions(2017) Khadka, SunitaThe present study entitled Effectiveness of Communicative Language Teaching in Teaching Communicative Functions was an attempt to find out the effectiveness of communicative language teaching in teaching communicative function. In order to carry out this study, I selected thirty-two students of Grade 10 from Shree Chyuridanda secondary school of Okhaldhunga district, using simple random sampling procedure. I used primary and secondary sources of data. To selecting the sample, a pre-test was administered to determine the students’ initial proficiency on communicative functions. The students were divided experimental and controlled by using odd and even ranking procedure. Same tools, materials, medium were used for the both groups. The only variation was the use of approach, i.e. communicative language teaching. After 30 days of teaching, the post-test was administrated. The individual scores taken from both pre-test and post-test were tabulated under different sub-headings. The difference between average score of pre-test and post-test was computed. The major findings of the study is teaching communicative function through communicative language teaching was found to be more effective than conventional teacher centered approaches. The progress was seen in favor of experimental group in almost all the items. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter deals with background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives, research hypotheses, significance of the study, delimitation of the study and operational definition of key terms. The second chapter deals with the review of related literature and conceptual framework that consists of review of theoretical literature, review of empirical literature, implications of the review for the study and conceptual framework. The third chapter deals with methods and procedure of the study that consists of design and method of the study, population, sample and sampling strategies, study area, data collection tools and approaches, and procedure. Similarly, the fourth chapter deals with data analysis and interpretation of results, summary and findings. The final chapter deals with conclusion and pedagogical implications. The final part of the study subsumes references and appendices.Item Grade X Students' proficiency in The Use of communicative Functions(Department of English Education, 2007) Jnawali, Shusil ChandraABSTRACT This study attempts to identify Grade X students' proficiency in the use ofcommunicative functions studying inpublic schools of Kathmandu and Lalitpurdistricts. For the study, the researcher took sample population from ten publicschools, five from each Kathmandu and Lalitpur district. Six students consisting of50% boys and 50 % girls from each school were selected as the subjects of thestudy. A set of test items was prepared consisting of 22 questions from eachlanguage function i.e. two questions from one function from Grade IX curriculum.The responses of the respondents were recorded in audiocassette forinterpretation. This study is divided into four chapters.The first chapter consists of the basic theoretical aspect of the research which includes general background, communicative functions of language,language functions used in data collection, relationship between structures andfunctions, literature review, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter tries to give an account of the methodology applied tocarry out the research work along with the limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis of data using statistical tools tomake the study more objective and accurate. It mainly includes schools wiseanalysis of the students' proficiency, function wise analysis of the students'proficiency and item wise analysis of errors. The fourth chapter presents the list of findings and some recommendationsmade on the basis of the analysis and interpretation of the data. The most striking feature of this study is its findings. Based on the collecteddata, the researcher came to the conclusion that the students are weaker inrelating language functions with their correct exponents. It has also been showed that most of the students use essay typeexpression when they are asked questions of certain situations.Item Teaching of Communicative Functions: Ananalysis of Classroom Activities(Department of English Education, 2008) Paudel, Pushpa RajThe present study entitled "Teaching of Communicative Functions: An Analysis ofClassroom Activities" aims at identifying classroom activities conducted by the teachersfor teaching communicative functions and problems encountered by themwhile teachingthem. This study was carried out using both primary and secondary sources of data. Forprimary data, I observed the classes of secondary English teachers with the help of thechecklists. I also distributed two sets of questionnaires to the selected teachers andstudents separately. The data collected through the observation checklists andquestionnaires were minutely analyzed. After the study and analysis, it was found thatdiscussion, pair work, role play and group work were the commonly used activities andthe hesitation of the students to speak, lack of adequate exposure to the students, teacheras an authority in the classroom, a large number of students in the classroom, use ofmother tongue in the classroom and lack of required physicalfacilities were the majorproblems encountered by the teachers in the teaching of communicative functions. Thisthesis mainly includes the following four chapters. The first chapter of the study deals with the general background, review of the relatedliterature, objectives of the study, significance of the study and definition of the specificterms. The second chapter deals with the methodology used in the study. The sources ofdata, the population, sample, research tools and the process of their preparation,administration and other procedure are described in this chapter. The third chapter is theanalysis and interpretation. The collected data have been analyzed and interpreted underdifferent headings and sub-headings. The last chapter, i.e. chapter fourincludes thefindings and recommendations. On the basis of the analyzed data, some findings havebeen extracted and in turn, on the basis of these findings, some recommendations havebeen made. Finally, the appendices include research tools and other information.
