It includes general background, background and origin of Maithili and English languages, importance of grammar,statement of problem, objectives of the study, significance of the study,research methodology,review of literature, limitations of the study and organization of the study. The second chapter deals with the study of Complement Clauses in English on the basis of different traditional and modern grammars. The third chapter which is one of the focal points of the dissertation has presented the analysis of Complement Clausein the Maithili language. The chapter analyses Complement Clauses on the basis of traditional and modern grammars. The fourth chapter which is the focal point of the thesis has found out some similarities and differences in English and Maithili languages in terms of Complement Clauses. And the fifth chapterdeals with pedagogical implication,summary and conclusion of the whole dissertation.Item Conditional Sentences in English and Maithili Languages: A Comparative Study(Department of English, 2010) Yadav, Pradip KumarMaithili belongs to the Eastern sub-group within the Indo-Aryan language family. Along with other Indo-Aryan language of India, such as Hindi, Gujaratior Marathi, it descends ultimately from an old Indo-Aryan (n) speech represented by the oral/written documents of Sanskrit. The relationship of Maithili to other Indo-Aryan languages is a subject of considerable scholarly debate. Maithili is that branch of the Indo-Aryan languages, which is spoken in Nepal and India and is the cultural and literary language of the country since long. English is an international language which is a common lingua Franca as well. It has played a crucial role in international communication of thoughts, ideas and sentiments. It is spoken as a first, second and foreign language all over the world. This work entitled Conditional Sentences in English and Maithili attempts to describe the conditional sentences in both languages along with their kinds,syntactic structures, their semantics, and their uses. The thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter gives the introduction of both English and Maithili languages. It also gives an outline of the entire study.The second and third chapters are the focal point of this dissertation which deal with conditional sentences in English and Maithili, respectively. The fourth chapters deals with the similarities and dissimilarities,between English and Maithili in terms of conditional sentence formation. The fifth chapter deals with the pedagogical implication of both languages. The sixth and the last chapter summarize the whole thesis and presents a brief conclusion.
